With several days of rain, it looks to be a refreshing sunny day today with highs in the upper 80s for the southeast Colorado region. For tonight, we drop down to lows in upper 50s.

On Thursday, a slight chance of rain with mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid 80s.

Now, the news.

As school prepares to start back and more individuals chose or are required to work from home, internet access has become a hot topic everywhere. In rural areas like Trinidad with tricky topography in certain areas, some have expressed concern with being able to access providers.

Beginning the regular work session for the Trinidad City Council, IT Director James Worley discussed that throughout town, fortunately individuals had access to internet through a variety of options.

Councilmember Rusty Goodall added he’d like to see the WiFi project on Main Street come to completion as soon as possible to be ready for tourists next year and help locals now.

Worley said that the next step was for Secom, whom they have already contracted to do the work, to put their equipment on top of buildings where they have existing fiber serving downtown.

City Economic Coordinator Wally Wallace said that they had signed a contract with Seacom giving them permission to set up antennas or towers on top of Simpson’s Rest and a few other points around town.

Worley added that Seacom would be installing wireless access points along Main Street and Commercial as well as providing publicly accessible internet access to whoever wants to connect to that system.

With questions about the reliability of the company, Worley said with any internet provider, reliability was a hit or miss and in terms of speeds for the downtown WiFi, said as of yet he was unsure as to what Seacom would be providing but they would cover that at their next meeting.

Mayor Phill Rico said there were a lot of possibilities with the potential downtown WiFi but also some possible issues that would need to be ironed out.

With the project continuing forward in the coming weeks, the Mayor said he hopes it will attract new businesses to the community.

Worley said there’s still a good bit of things to get in place but he hopes to see it really come about come September.

Today in the state, more than 40 people were temporarily stranded on Monday after a mudslide prevented travel on a popular roads and trails in Telluride, CBS Denver reported yesterday. The slide occurred in the middle of the day and blocked Bridal Veil Road, according to the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office. It measured 35 feet wide and 3-5 feet deep. Even in Trinidad, we experienced some of that torrential downfall around that time.

At least 40 people, including more than two dozen hikers and the occupants of at least a dozen vehicles, walked out or drove out of the area after county road crews created a temporary passage.

The crew’s work is not done. Bridal Veil Road, Bridal Veil Trail, and the Via Ferrata, an adventure climb, were closed for the rest of the day. The roads reopened on Tuesday morning.

A drone was used in an attempt to locate a white male wearing a yellow jacket who was reported to have been seen starting the Via Ferrata at the time the slide-producing storm rolled into town. He was not found. Anyone with information about the person is asked to call San Miguel County dispatch.

All other hikers and motorists safely exited the hillside without injury.

Today in the nation, U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao announced today that the Trump Administration will award more than $273 million in airport safety and infrastructure grants through the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to 41 states and the District of Columbia, American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Puerto Rico.

A complete listing of grants (PDF) and an interactive map of airports receiving funding is available on the FAA website.

The total includes just over $242 million from the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and $31 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act grants to equal a 100 percent federal share.

The grants will be used for a variety of critical infrastructure and safety projects. The projects include purchasing aircraft rescue and firefighting equipment, constructing runways and taxiways, repairing runways and taxiways, installing aircraft lighting and signage, conducting airport master plan studies and installing airport perimeter fencing.

Fun stuff, I know, but hey, it’s nice to hear when the federal government is putting our tax dollars to good use.
