Mostly clear skies today in southeastern Colorado with highs in the mid 80s, tonight we’ll drop to the upper 50s.

Over the weekend Saturday and Sunday both show chances of rain as we move into the afternoon with highs both days in the mid 80s.

Now, the news.

Finishing up Monday’s work session, Trinidad City Council was presented with the first draft of an ordinance adopting House Bill 1230 allowing for cannabis hospitality rooms in the community. Trinidad Mayor Phil Rico said they had opted out of the state’s legalization previously but could choose to opt back in at any time should they choose to do so.

City Attorney Les Downs presented some background on the subject before gathering a consensus of how council felt about it moving forward to the first ordinance reading.

With some council stressing the benefit it would bring to Trinidad would be positive and an economic benefit, Rico said he thought it may actually be a limiting factor.

Ending what turned into a little over a three-hour meeting, Goodall, Ogletree, and Griego all said they would like to see the ordinance continue to be developed. But with DeBono, Shew, Williamson, and Rico against allowing cannabis consumption lounges, the ordinance did not get the blessing needed to continue to finalization and the eventual first reading.

With the draft ordinance tabled, Wallace echoed the majority of council stating that there would have to be more information provided to really make any further decisions.

According to Wallace, if cannabis hospitality businesses are going to be permitted in Trinidad someday it's going to be up to cannabis business owners and interested entrepreneurs to demonstrate to City Council and the citizens of Trinidad how these types of businesses will be a benefit to our community while addressing safety concerns.

Happening in the state, a Golden man died Thursday after a fall of about 700 feet in Rocky Mountain National Park KKRT reported yesterday.

The 26-year-old victim was traversing Broadway Ledge, on the east face of Longs Peak, with a group when he fell about 600 to 800 feet, according to a news release.

Parks rangers received an emergency call from another group of climbers on Broadway Ledge near Fields Chimney who saw the fall. Rangers reached the victim at the base of the Chimney.

His body was flown by helicopter about 3:45 p.m. to a landing spot in the Upper Beaver Meadows area of the park and was released to the Boulder County coroner’s office. His name was not released.

In the world, the coronavirus crisis might be causing widespread economic upheaval around the world, but the world's biggest tech firms are thriving BBC reported yesterday.

Amazon sales soared 40% in the three months ending June, while Apple saw a surge in purchases of its iPhones and other hardware.

At Facebook, the number of people on its platforms, which include WhatsApp and Instagram, jumped by 15%.

The gains come as the firms face scrutiny over their size and power.

At a hearing in Washington on Wednesday, lawmakers grilled the companies about whether they were abusing their dominance to quash rivals, noting the sharp contrast between their fortunes and many other firms.

The gains weren't a surprise to analysts - though just how well many of the firms did, was.

At Amazon, the quarterly profit of $5.2bn (£4bn) was the biggest since the company's start in 1994 and came despite heavy spending on protective gear and other measures due to the virus.

The e-commerce firm's sales surged 40% for the three months ending 30 June to $88.9bn (£67.9bn) - its strongest year-on-year growth in years. Profits rose to $5.2bn from 2.6bn for the same period in 2019 as a comparison.

At Facebook, revenues rose 11% - slower than other quarters - but were still ahead of analysts' expectations, as small businesses continued to turn to the company to advertise. The firm's profits hit almost $5.2bn for the quarter.

Happening this weekend, on Saturday, the Las Animas County Fair will start at noon out at the county fair grounds. The Livestock Market Sale will begin at 2 p.m. Also on Saturday, Fort Wooton will host live music at the fort starting at 5 p.m. bring your own blankets and chairs.
