Today, Las Animas County 4 H Director says the Las Animas County Fair was a big success and in the state, the governor had good news about the coronavirus in Colorado, but said it's not time to let our guard up. In the world, two explosions rock Beirut killing at least 73 people.

Mostly sunny skies today with highs around 90 degrees for the region and slight chance of scattered afternoon showers. Tinight, we drop to around 60 for the high.

For Thursday, sunny again with afternoon showers and highs around 90 degrees.

Last week, the Las Animas County Fair Board hosted the annual Las Animas County Fair, primarily so the 4H and FFA students in the county who had diligently prepared and cared for their animals all year had a place to showcase their hard work.

On Friday, July 31, 4H and FFA members gathered at the Fairgrounds arena for the Goat Show. Although there were some differences this year, that didn’t stop the students from enjoying the show said 4H Director Lori Arnhold.

Arnhold explained it was different than what they’re use to because of the county’s health variance but everybody had a great attitude and worked together to make it happen.

Of the differences, Arnhold said they had to be extra prepared with staff and supplies for the event bringing in people from around the county.

Arnhold expressed her appreciation for all the support from the community and said although this coming year may also look a little different moving forward, members of 4H can still count on having their clubs with new enrollments in October.

With another couple of months before wrapping up, Arnhold said 4H members are still working on finishing up the year.

Happening in the state, Gov. Jared Polis (D-Colorado) had good news during his news conference on Tuesday afternoon: what he called an “alarming increase” in COVID-19 cases in the state have begun to level off, thanks in part he says to a statewide mask mandate and a 10 p.m. last call for alcohol.

He added the state has a reproductive value of about 1 – meaning that cases are neither increasing nor decreasing, and that hospitals are well below capacity.

Polis also applauded the Colorado High School Activities Association for its announcement that sports would return this upcoming school year, although fall sports like football and volleyball will be pushed to the spring and said he would attend the very first high school sporting event in Colorado since March 12.

Two huge explosions have rocked Beirut, killing at least 73 people, injuring thousands more, and sending an enormous blast wave across the city that shattered windows, knocked down doors and shook buildings The Guardian reported yesterday.

Hundreds of homes were left uninhabitable after the blasts ripped through a section of the Lebanese capital’s port.

Thousands of people sought treatment in nearby hospitals, which were struggling to cope with the casualties. Cars were left strewn across the surrounding highway, and the blast was heard up to 80km (50 miles) away in the country’s north. The health ministry put the confirmed death toll at at least 73, with at least 3,700 injured.

Initial reports suggested that a fireworks warehouse was involved. The Lebanese security chief, Abbas Ibrahim, later blamed combustible chemicals stored in a warehouse. The interior minister, Mohammed Fahmi, said ammonium nitrate had been among the materials stored and called for an investigation into how it ignited.

The final death toll from the biggest explosion to ever rock Beirut is expected to be significantly higher than the figures given in its immediate aftermath.
