Today, Trinidad City Council meets for their regular meeting and a stabbing at Safeway sends one person to the hospital. In the state, Kanye West is approved as a presidential candidate on this November’s election ballot and in the world, China quarantines a village, but not for COVID-19.

Sunny skies today with highs showing in the upper 80’s and dropping down to lows in the upper 50’s.

For tomorrow, Sunny again with highs hovering around 90 degrees.

Now, here’s the news.

During the regular Trinidad City Council meeting on Tuesday, August 4, City Finance Director Cheryl Navarette provided a financial report for the second quarter of 2020 explaining that things were going better than expected.

Navarette said Marijuana collections as discussed in a previous work session, were over collected by $857,000.

For overall marijuana sales, in 2019 with 24 shops dispensing Trinidad saw $25,893,000 in total sales. This year, with one additional dispensary (25 dispensaries total) the town pulled in $31,414,000 in sales.

Navarette also expressed that there were some losses, with the biggest hit in charges for services.

Additionally passed was an ordinance increasing fees at the city’s landfill.

Public Works Director Tom Beach said the adjusted fees included a $5 charge for upholstered furniture such as sofas, love seats, chairs, ottomans, mattresses, and other similar items.

Yard wastes and limbs will also begin being charged with a raise to $31 per ton or a $10 minimum.

On August 6 around 11:18 a.m. Trinidad Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing at the Safeway store at 457 West Main Street.

Officers arrested Jeffry Coronado, 27, on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder, assault in the first degree, and possession of a weapon by a previous offender in connection with the stabbing.

Patrol Captain Dan DuRan stated Coronado and the male victim knew each other and it was not a case of someone randomly stabbing people in Safeway’s parking lot.

The victim was transported to Mount San Raphael Hospital then airlifted by Flight for Life to Parkview Medical Center. Currently, DuRan said the hospital has informed them that the condition of the victim is “stable.”

The name of the victim has not been released at this time.

Rapper Kanye West, who is attempting to mount an independent presidential campaign, has been approved for Colorado’s Nov. 3 ballot, the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office said Thursday as reported last week by the Denver Post.

West has filed paperwork to appear on several states’ ballots.

In the last month, West’s sometimes-public struggles with mental health issues have fueled speculation about his bid. His running mate is Michelle Tidball, a self-described “biblical life coach” in Cody, Wyoming, where West has a ranch.

Authorities in the Chinese region of Inner Mongolia have sealed off a village after a resident there died from bubonic plague, a centuries-old disease responsible for the most deadly pandemic in human history.

The patient died of circulatory system failure, according to the statement. It did not mention how the patient had caught the plague.

To curb the spread of the disease, authorities sealed off Suji Xincun village, where the patient had lived, and ordered daily disinfection of homes. All villagers have so far tested negative for the disease, the statement said.

Interestingly, since it started being mapped in 1970, there are an average of seven human plague cases reported each year in the United States and you know where most of them happen? Well, the Center for Disease Control says Northern New Mexico, Northern Arizona, and Southern Colorado.
