Weather today is looking mostly sunny with highs in the mid 90s. For tonight, we’ll drop to lows around 60 degrees.

For the weekend, Saturday shows some cloud coverage with highs again in the mid 90s. Then on Sunday, thunderstorms look likely as we move into the afternoon with highs a little cooler in the mid 80s.

Now, here’s the news.

Starting off Monday’s work session was another discussion for marijuana consumption clubs. At a previous work session, Mayor Phil Rico called a consensus vote on whether or not to move forward with the ordinance, which came just shy of majority approval with a four to three consensus vote. However, with several council expressing they didn’t feel right not allowing for more information to be provided, the Mayor expressed it was better to see the discussion all the way through.

Councilmember Aaron Williamson shared he wanted to be sure the decision made about the clubs was based on what was best and not because he felt a certain way about the issue.

Going around for additional comments, Councilmember Rusty Goodall expressed that being the owner of a motel and RV park since marijuana has been legalized, he has witnessed that older generations were coming to town strictly to consume here because of laws in their home states preventing them from returning with any product. This being the case, Goodall said he didn’t want to loose a chance at an opportunity should another Front Range destination move first.

With the city being behind having bars where people can drink, Goodall felt it was hypocritical not to allow the same with cannabis.

Councilmember Erin Ogletree expressed she appreciated being able to explore the possibility more, adding that she would really be interested in hearing from current marijuana industry leaders as to if they had any interest in exploring the new terrain and how it would be traversed.

Ogletree said she had always felt that the city should have a place that people could safely and legally consume marijuana.

The mayor finished his comments by adding that he just didn’t see a benefit to the City of Trinidad or how they would be able to make money.

City Economic Coordinator Wally Wallace stated he felt it was important to provide a welcoming, safe place in which people coming across state lines could consume without feeling forced to take it back home illegally.

Wallace added that to prevent out of state visitors from participating in illegal activity, it should be an obligation of the city to prioritize creating safe environments where people can consume cannabis here.

City Clerk Audra Garrett recommended they set up a special public meeting on the subject with a broadcaster so that everyone had the opportunity to provide needed and indeed desired input to council.

With council in agreement, Garrett said it would be set for August 24 at 5 p.m. For those who would like to join, you can be put on the list by calling her at 719-846-9843 ext. 135 or audra.garrett@trinidad.co.gov.

In the state, Gov. Jared Polis plans to extend Colorado's statewide mask mandate, his office confirmed Wednesday and reported yesterday by NBC 9 News.

The mandate, put into place at midnight on July 17, is set to expire this weekend and requires face coverings be worn in indoor public places.

The order applies to anyone over the age of 10. People who have medical issues or disabilities that preclude them from wearing masks are exempt from the mandate.

People who refuse to wear a mask in required areas could face civil or criminal penalties, such as being prosecuted for trespassing. If a business doesn’t comply, it risks losing its license.

Today in the world, a peaceful day on a German beach turned to chaos when a wild boar swam out of the Baltic Sea and ran loose through crowds of sunbathers.

A video shared by the Seebad Warnemunde resort on Facebook shows the boar coming out of the sea at a crowded beach in Schonagen, Schleswig-Holstein.

The footage shows a man attempt to ward the wild pig away from the crowds with a shovel, because, who doesn’t bring a spade with them to the beach? Being undeterred by the welcome ashore with a whack to the head, the boar ran through the beach, sending sunbathers running for safety.

The boar is believed to be the same animal earlier spotted swimming miles away, off the coast of Lower Saxony leading one to speculate just how salty that bacon would be...

Happening this weekend in Trinidad, Green Chile season is upon us and this Saturday, Nicol’s Cottonwood Corner will be selling and roasting green chile peppers from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mangino Automotive at 1631 East Main Street. They claim their green chilis are better than Pueblo’s so be sure to check ‘em out and let us know what you think!
