A little hazy today with sunny skies and highs in the lower 80s. Tonight, we’ll drop to a low in the mid 50s.

For the weekend, Saturday and Sunday show sunny skies as of right now with highs in the mid 80s.

Now, here’s the news.

With the recent acquisition of Crazy French Ranch, Colorado Parks and Wildlife has a unique opportunity to create the state’s newest park from scratch.

CPW is “not opening the floodgates” just yet, though, said Crystal Dreiling, park manager for both Fishers Peak and Trinidad Lake state parks. Visitors, however, can look forward to “a sneak peek” of the park this January.

The group working on the master plan, which also includes members of the city of Trinidad, The Nature Conservancy, the Trust for Public Land, and Great Outdoors Colorado, aims to open the new park in phases.

Leading the group of partners is Wade Shelton, TPL’s senior project manager, with the assistance of THK Associates Incorporated of Aurora, a landscape architecture firm, and with trail creation plans from Tony Boone Trails.

Dreiling as well as Shelton said the team is being extremely careful in the development of the new park. It is important all areas of the park are mapped for its ecosystems, which include wildlife and plants. Also important is the work of finding the best recreation areas and documenting the park’s history for the public with every corner researched and identified Dreiling said.

The park was purchased in February with Colorado Gov. Jared Polis officially naming it a state park in June.

Shelton explained, however, that because of the current pandemic, COVID-19, park planning has moved slower than expected, but now the partners are moving forward.

The partners will draft a playbook with two main goals: recreation and conservation.

A new website at fisherspeakstatepark.com was launched Labor Day weekend where people can follow park developments. While some of the links are still under construction, people are encouraged to visit the site often for updates.

In the state, also on the topic of state parks, a Colorado State Parks employee responded to a call about an unusual animal and was surprised to find exactly what the caller described: an iguana wandering loose in a park.

Eleven Mile State Park Manager Darcy Mount said she has responded to several calls about exotic animals that turned out to be cases of creature mistaken identity, so she was skeptical when a park visitor reported an iguana wandering loose.

Mount said iguanas are native to tropical climates and would not last long in the colder Colorado climate, even during the summer.

Mount said she was shocked to find the caller was correct.

Mount said she set up a heat lamp for the iguana in her office until it could be transported to the Colorado Reptile Humane Society in Longmont.

Officials said the young adult iguana, now dubbed Miles, will soon be available for adoption.

In the world, after several teasers and mini-events, Sony has finally revealed the price of its much-anticipated PlayStation 5.

It costs $499, putting it head to head with its rival, Microsoft's Xbox Series X, which likewise is going for $499.

The PS5 will be released on November 12 in the United States, Japan, Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. For other countries, it's coming out on November 19. In a footnote, Sony said that China's launch date is still "under exploration."

The Xbox Series X is coming out on November 10, beating the PS5 to market by two full days. Microsoft is also selling a cheaper Series S for $299.

Sony has a "digital edition" of the PS5, which does away with the console's disc drive, and shaves $100 off the price tag, bringing it to $399.

As we get closer to November, the competition between the two companies is heating up. Meanwhile, I’m still content with my Nintendo Switch.

Coming up this weekend, the Southern Colorado Family Center will be hosting an outdoor movie at the Las Animas County Fairgrounds starting at 7 p.m. The family-friendly film will be Spies in Disguise.
