Alright, let’s check in with the weather.

WEATHER

Mostly cloudy today with a little sun coming at us later this afternoon and highs in the upper 40s. Tonight, we’ll drop down to 32 for the low.

For the weekend, Saturday will see sunny skies with highs in the mid 70s and on Sunday, we’re currently looking at a 20 percent chance of snow after noon and highs in the mid 40s.

Now, here’s the news.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, Trinidad City Council met for their regular meeting and during council reports, Mayor Phil Rico stated that he and City Clerk Audra Garrett had done an interview with Radio France discussing what was going on with the cannabis industry; just another instance of Trinidad being recognized throughout the nation and beyond for the economic development happening in town.

Council also heard a public hearing on the transfer of ownership of a tavern liquor license filed by Flo-Jo’s Tavern Hall at 125 N. Chestnut Street. Formerly, the location was known as JuJo’s Pub. The establishment had previously received a temporary license and is already open. Economic Director Wally Wallace said the new business was open 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

A public hearing for the 2021 budget was also presented and offered a chance for members of the community to question or comment on the subject. Mayor Rico opened up the floor to anyone who wanted to speak for or against the budget, but no one came forward.

With no public comment on the budget, City Clerk Audra Garrett said it would be brought before council once more during a work session to go into more detail and would be slated for approval at the next regular council meeting (Nov. 4).

Council also moved to approve a few changes to the city’s ordinances to clean up the code to make it more consistent and get rid of some duplications of information presented therein.

During the consent agenda approval section, council voted in favor of re-appointing Sam Coker and Jonathan Norris to the Planning, Zoning, and Variance Commission along with the approval of bills and payroll for the city.

Council also approved Kris Miller to serve on the City Tourism Board. Miller has an extensive background in tourism including working in radio, television, and theater.

Among other items discussed, since the next regular council meeting would fall on Election Day (Nov. 3) City Clerk Audra Garrett said the meeting would be moved to Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 6 p.m.

Continuing work on the sewer trunk line replacement of a line City Manager Mike Valentine said he believed was well over 100 years old, the town is now moving into phase two. To keep the ball rolling, council moved to approve a phase two bid of just over one-million dollars.

Valentine added that they were able to secure some grant funds from the Department of Local Affairs to get the project going.

A wildfire burning in Grand County, Colorado, has exploded from 19,000 acres to more than 125,000 on Thursday, forcing thousands of families to evacuate.

The so-called East Troublesome Fire raced through the town of Grand Lake and into the western portion of Rocky Mountain National Park, which closed to visitors Thursday, CBS Denver reported.

Thick smoke and flames were closing in on homes and terrifying residents. Security video even captured the scene as flames overtook a home. It was not immediately clear how much damage the fire caused in the Grand Lake community.

The flames are being driven by high winds and dead, dry timber.

Nearly 300 firefighters are battling the flames in dense wooded hills as the fire continues to spread into the national park. This wildfire could end up merging with the Cameron Peak Fire, which was reported to be burning just a few miles away, according to CBS Denver.

Necessity is the mother of invention they say… So when. a Seattle arcade was forced to closed for eight months due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they invented a new feature to bring back customers still concerned about spreading the virus: touchless pinball machines.

Add-a-Ball Amusements in the Fremont neighborhood closed its doors in early March to slow the spread of the coronavirus outbreak, and co-owner Brad Johnsen said employees started discussing possibilities to resume gaming before the business reopened its doors this week.

Employees at the arcade worked on the idea for two days before revealing a prototype pinball machine modification operated completely by foot pedals.

The business reopened this week at 50 percent capacity, in accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, and the touchless pinball machines were revealed to the public.

The business is also encouraging customers with Nintendo Switches to bring their portable consoles so they can still play video games with friends. Trinidad entrepreneurs take note…
